Happy July 4thWelcome to July! Independence Day is right around the corner and with it often comes lots of eating and drinking. Here are some tips for keeping those extra pounds at bay and trying to stay healthy over the long holiday weekend (and through the summer...and year).

How to keep from pigging out at that barbecue:

  • Use whole wheat buns: whole wheat, rye, or sourdough buns are the healthier choices
  • Grill lean meats: choose the leanest cuts of beef, chicken and pork
  • Practice portion control: opt for smaller burgers or just half split a steak
  • Load up on grilled veggies: fill half your plate with veggies and healthy salads (no, potato salad doesn’t qualify)
  • Don’t skip meals to try to “save up” your calories for the event: you’ll want to eat everything in sight out later!

You may not get want to go for a run or make it to the gym, but try these physical activities:

  • Dancing: Music playing at your barbecue? Get up and dance! But make it a samba or something equally active (a waltz won’t cut it).
  • Standing: Believe it or not, you’ll burn an extra 100+ calories by standing instead of sitting while socializing.
  • Strolling: Walk around while on the phone, talking to friends and family, even choose the farthest restroom!
